Re: Why are ther no jobs for 14 and a half year olds???

I am 14, and I like to think that I have a basic grasp of the English language and grammar. I am also looking for a job, and having the same problem that Jason had. However, I would have never taken the iniative to ask people, like he did, and I admire him for that. However, I am APALLED at the shameless way people have been slating (definition: a severely critical attack; "the reviewers gave his book a sound slating", for anyone who didn't know that and would, no doubt, have been happy to attack me about) him. He's just asking for some friendly advice, not writing to the queen. Perfect spelling and grammar are not necessary! On that subject, if I were attacking people about spelling and grammar I would at least check my own - for future reference, 'you're' means 'you are'. 'Your' does not.
And Kenneth, I'm going to attack you for a bit. I will use the point, quote, comment technique that I use for coursework essays. 1. You appear to be a tad on the arrogant side. This is shown by your use of the patronising metaphor "And as for those GCSE's, I understand they give those away in cereal packages these days", comparing GCSE's to small, plastic, worthless toys which have no discernable value, that are received free with Coco Pops (which I, personally, was never very fond of). I invite you to attempt a GCSE course and then come back and tell me how worthless and easy they are. 2. You said the 'humerous' was a bone, related to the funny bone. That is, actually, the humerus. Perhaps this was a deliberate spelling mistake in a misguided attempt to be humorous? 3. You appear to be implying that all teenagers are good for is serving French fries (presumably in McDonalds) and collecting rubbish. I would like to point out that part of the problem is that McDonalds wouldn't hire us - if we could refer to the post by Jason, that is the problem. I think that you are completely out of order, especially when you imply that GCSE's are easy to obtain and worthless. I am working hard towards mine, and I'm pretty sure you couldn't do them. So don't pretend to be an authority on something when you're not. I also think that it's incredibly rude to attack someone like that when they just wanted advice.
Now I realise I am being hypocritical by attacking Kenneth like this, and he's not the only one who has been unforgiveably rude on this blog. However, his messages have been the only ones I have felt personally insulted by.
If I were any of the people who had attacked young people on this blog, completely unnecessarily, I would be ashamed of myself. That is my view.

Poppy, I agree with many things, and employers are looking for qualifications and quality communication skills, and depends on the job, and many other factors. I do beleive employers value motivation and enthusiasm, honest and dependablity equally or more so. It depends on the job doesn't it?? Does a window cleaner or plumber have to know the difference between an official, demi-official letter and a memoradum??? He possible does but they are not the main aspects and personal qualities of the work

Poor Jason, he came on here to ask for some friendly advice and gets shot down. I think many of you missed the point, he wasn't applying for a job, he was asking if there were any jobs out there for him. I'm sure if someone had something to offer him, he would have been able to come up with a very well written application letter.
I think today's "older generation" are very rude and stuck up. I saw recently on the news that a survey of the Top 30 cities in the world showed that under 25s were more polite and better mannered than people 40+ and were more likely to hold a door open for someone or say please and thank you.
Its a sad world when a 14 year old has some initiative to ask for a job and only gets insulted and bullied by pathetic adults!
Oh by the way, "The Boy" has got a name!

Ya'll really should back off. I'm also 14, and teenagers are usually hooked on aim so we get used to shortcuts like cuz and relie to shorten up the typing time. And really, I just don't get why nobody trusts us - I mean nobody! People just throw you out the door, even when you tell them that you're a straight A student and you've never gotten a detention in your life. I mean, you try your very hardest to prove to them that you're responsible, but all they're looking at is the number is the number 14. Yes, some teenagers are really stupid, but there are a lot more responsible ones that you think The reason he posted is because, like me, a lot of teenagers are kind of desperate, because we want nice clothes and accesories just as much as the 16 year olds too, but we have no money at all, and god forbid we ask our parents, adults like ya'll, for money or clothing. Give us a break for God's sake, because you were our age once, and I know that you felt the same way - that no one thinks of you as responsilbe.

I am 14 years old myself and have to say I was shocked by how snobbish some adults are! You say teenagers cant be bothered but HELLO why dont YOU make the effort to learn text language yourselves, it doesnt take the brain of britain to work out what each shortened word means. The english language has changed alot over the years, so all I can say to those adults that complain is KEEP UP! There should be more jobs for 14 years olds and I think it is a shame that adults always feel the need to patronise youths. Many of us are just as capable as adults and just remember who will be looking after you in your old age! I hope you took notice of the fact I did not speak in text language, so it should be easier for you to read without the help of a teenage translator.

Kat, I am sorry to tell you but, with the attitude you have, you will find it difficult to obtain a job with an organisation run by adults!
I have had many years' experience of work which have taught me that people of all ages have to adapt to each other. Text language was invented due to the fact that texting on a mobile phone can only be done by one finger/thumb. Typing on a full keyboard is much easier for the experienced typist as all fingers/thumbs can be used to type out the proper English language.
If you are not prepared to adapt to your employers' wishes you will not succeed in holding down a job. Most adults are quite capable and intelligent enough to fathom out text language (I managed to fathom out your last "sentence" and the answer, I am afraid, would be "No" unless you are prepared to adapt to the adult world.)

Lynda, I do not usually have a negative attitude, but reading comments by people such as kenneth just annoyed me. I just felt the need to rant. Sometimes us kids, need to let out our oppinions but usually can't as it is not our place. Yes, I do agree my last message was attitudy but I stand by most of what I said. My attitude however though is just fine (in the real world) and I can adapt to any environment. However this is a forum and there are no adaptations. I have been in the adult world and coped just fine. You have just proved my point from my last message, so thank you.

Lynda, I love the fact that you are still arguing with teenagers. You tell Kat that her attitude is poor, yet yours is just as bad becuase all you seem to do on this forum is moan and disagree with other users and take digs at young people.
Personally, I'd give Kat a job becuase she seems to be quite an intelligent young lady and a strong mind is good in helping you survive in the adult world. How do you know Kat isn't going to get all As in her GCSEs and grow into a fantastic business lady. When your just starting out in work at the age of 16, it seems everyone is against you, its no wonder they have negative attitudes towards other adults. But its with the help of mature adults who have experienced life, that they can learn and grow.
Also, who are you to dictate what the proper English language is? I'm sure people like William Shakespear would disagree with you on what you believe is the correct English! After all the language has changed alot since their time too.

I cannot believe this thread has not been "trolled"!!!
Are there really so many illiterate teenagers with such a bad attitude problem they cannot take advice from someone who has many years experience in succeeding in her secretarial job?
If William Shakespeare was still around he may be using the current English and not that of the 16th century. Unfortunately, for you, chwb2003, he died 390 years ago so would not be able to back up your argument!
The English, which is the language of the current commercial world, is the English which I gained very good passes in GCE O'level (equivalent to GCSE) and RSA 1 and 2.
I will not post anymore on this thread as it has obviously been subject of people out to pick an argument.

It has always been the way of the world that teenagers have felt the way you do, wanting to go out and find their own individuality and earn some cash along the way. This is a good thing and commendable that you feel like this and I congratulate your enthusiasm.
In reality, if you look at your posting, you generalise all adults regarding texting, tell them to keep up in the way of the world whilst knowing nothing of how it really is in a working environment but then expect these same adults to give you a chance of a job.
So, if Lynda, came to you, verbally rubbished your best intentions and then said but I really want you to pay me some money for something I want to do, would you even give her the time of day? This is exactly what you and some other posters are trying to achieve and then feel able to mouth off when it doesnt happen.
You are not unique, it is the pecking order of the modern workplace and because it isnt working in your favour, it is neither here nor there, just get used to it because nothing is going to change it and giving it attitude will just keep you out of work for that much longer.
It is just your turn, grow up and get over it because if you dont, no one else will give a toss.
