Ireland and EU; I hope the Lisbon Treaty gets booted into touch. Brown denied me a vote in a promised EU constitution referendum, them denied me a general election so I could boot him out, and get an EU referendum. Unemployed, work shy and £300 per day prison imates. These folk need to be found useful society jobs, like street cleaning, litter picking, sorting recycling, picking vegetables. If not, no benefits, or credits or future food/energy vouchers. Society, the public tax payer, communities need more back from thi s section of people, in return for support from the public purse. Couch vegging, TV watching and sponging are no longer new world options. Everyone has to be useful. Harsh perhaps, but financial reality. Prisons need recycling and composting centres built next door so inmates have to do work to cover their food costs, prison costs and money for families. Or tagged and sent to pick veg to feed the prison. Otherwise, its porridge and water, no TV, no privilges in a grot wing..      Report

Of course not it wouldn't politically correct, you have too think of about the poor palestinians (sic). The EU calls all the shots now Britain would have to remove itself  this crap corrupt regime. Look at the amount we put in and have to beg to get any thing back. Most of the recent countries that have joined are 3rd world economies. Just wait till kosovo joins.    Report

Powers should be restored to parliaments with the Commission banned for seeking extra political powers such a defence, foreign policy. Its prime role should be an economic agency, like it was initially, creating jobs, trade and business accoss EU, especially the UK; and should be run on a business with accounts/aiming for value addition.    Report

That to me stinks like a fascist state I feel as if they don't trust us or we are too thick to understand the treaties. The EU might have stopped wars between various European countries but the old divided histories still remain.Serbia and Turkey will and have the muscle to be a threat when decide to claim back lost land. As our forces are committed in 2 on going wars and will be for years too come. We the British people don't want to be ruled from Brussels by the euro mafia. The Lisbon Treaty should now be dead all we need is freedom too trade with any country world wide and have our own laws which govern us.    Report

It costs the same or less than the most modern incinerator. Money in You can work out the cost to tax payer of landfilling, incinerating or MBTing for the same 100,000Tpa collected via 52 collections, no recycling. Its a total drain on the public purse and simply doesn't stack up. Money out!    Report

Or is it cheaper that all sorting is done us (mugs) ps the bin gets its 1 litre jeys finest after I have sieved the little baby maggots out, won't belong before the bin-men (wimps) have to wear gas masks because of the stench omitting from the bins chemicals or rotting left overs. I think 2 weeks in the summer is unreasonable, and we should adopt a more seasonable collection, I even convinced my local councilor that this is the way forward and it will be on their agenda. As with the bad press that Norwich city council got (world-wide) it made them all look like fools. We are getting something similar at Costessey by the company SRM. Yes its cost. recycling is cheaper on tax payers long term. Machinery costs to run/ keep going and higher them MRFs to build and run; but cheaper than incinerators.. Problem is the country haven't decided which technology they will put at Kings Lynn. Local people want a Arrowbio/SRM solution rather than a burner. You can't blame them? Blue bin is only part of the eventual bin jigsaw. In a 1-3 years time people will have weekly food waste collections. My personal opinion and experience is Blue bins/ AWCs are fine, pro temp, we are not Naples, but councils should pledge a weekly collection of garbage if summer heatwaves are predicted (ie 2-4 weeks) until they have an eventual weekly food waste collection in place, that negates food in garbage. Waste officers can interview like planks given the chance. Norwich CC looked foolish because they had to make excuses for one rule fits all, Citycare's overzealousness, and working out reasonable dispensations /flexibility for 90 year old pensioners.    Report

Thats the problem, and the green con. Basically large companies should be exposed for being Brown, claiming Green. Thats what Gordon's spinning falsely anyway. They are burnt in cement kilns (incinerators) so incineration by proxy producing death particles PM2.5s, no different from orimulsion. Using coke be safer or natural gas/biogas. Thats why many people are against incinerators, RDF, and incinerators by proxy; the real big real con by industry. The best idea, is divide most waste into useable product, purify and quality control it, and gasplasma /Arrowbio the 10-30% that is difficult/ composite; and look at designing out this waste, exert producer responsiblity over time. Batteries to rechargable batteries, or disposable  razors are products in case.    Report

Its like running a Rolls Royce on diesel with water in it. Not good, not max efficiency. 2) Fortnightly Blue Bin for Valuables to recycling (card,paper, container plastics grades 1 &2, ferrous and non ferrous cans, batteries.) to Hi Tech MRF 3) Glass fortnightly separately, Green Box. Glass shards contaminates paper, paper/contaimnates glass. Its widely known in both industry, newsprint, paperchain, glass association; they are commercially unhappy with mixed /low value feedstock. 4) The rest Fortnightly in the mixed (residual) rubbish bin (no/little food -see 1) to PLASMA/GASPLASMA or ARROWBIO type: Uneconomic plastics, composites, nappies, sanitary/cosmetics, disposable razers, plastic wrapping, crisp packets, biro pens, soiled paper/card, old DVDs.
